The
goal of this website is to bring attention to the differences
between the modern Morgan and the "traditional"
style Morgan. Why is this important? Because we want to preserve
the look and the bloodlines that made the Morgan Horse so
unique.
The
Morgan Horse was bred to be a versatile horse with the stamina
to pull the plow all day in the field, the beauty to take
the family to church on Sunday, the talent to show at the
county fair and the gentle, kind disposition of a loyal companion
for all. That is the horse we want to preserve and promote.
There
are many beautiful, versatile, talented and 'traditional'
looking Morgans today who do not fit the criteria for Foundation.
It is NOT our intention to say or imply that they are not
a Morgan Horse. Many of us own non-Foundation horses that
we wouldn’t trade for the world.
We
merely want to bring focused attention to the "older"
bloodlines of the Morgan Horse so that we all may continue
to enjoy the efforts of Morgan Horse breeders of yesteryear.
Many old bloodlines have disappeared and/or have been diluted.
The old lines that are left and have not been caught up in
the out crossing must be saved from further loss or it is
possible to loose the "original" blood and type
forever.
If
you breed a "traditional" looking mare with one
or two saddlebred lines to a stallion of the same, then continue
that way with succeeding generations, pretty soon those saddlebred
lines will have a greater and greater influence and the result
will be a horse that eventually doesn’t look like the
'traditional' type Morgan at all. This is what happened with
modern Morgans. If you’ve gone to a gaited horse show
lately, you would see Morgans that so closely resemble Saddlebreds,
that it’s almost impossible to tell them apart.
Again,
if we don’t “draw a line” in the sand now
and establish criteria for what constitutes foundation, soon
there won’t be any of these horses to enjoy for future
generations…and what a tragedy that would be.
Sincerely,
FoundationMorganHorse.com and the Foundation Morgan Horse
Society
